Region Heraklion

Heraklion Region at a Glance

The Heraklion Region covers the central-north part of Crete. It is home to the island’s capital, the main airport and port, the Minoan Palace of Knossos, long family beaches, and inland villages surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

If you arrive in Crete by plane or ferry, there is a high chance your trip will start in Heraklion. This hub page brings together my guides, beaches, and experiences in the region so you can decide where to stay and what to see beyond the airport and the city center.

What Makes Heraklion Special

  • Capital of Crete: a busy port city with museums, local markets, street food, and a lively seafront.
  • Minoan history: world-famous archaeological sites such as Knossos and major collections in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
  • Long sandy beaches: resort areas east and west of the city with hotels, beach bars, and easier sea access than in western Crete.
  • Wine and villages: inland villages like Archanes and Peza, surrounded by vineyards, traditional tavernas, and a slower rhythm of life.
  • Central position: a convenient base if you want to explore both the east (Lasithi) and the west (Rethymno, Chania) during one trip.
