6 Kamares – Traditional Cretan Cuisine on Chania Old Port

If you want a warm, authentic dinner in Chania that feels relaxing rather than noisy,
6 Kamares is exactly that kind of place. It sits on the Old Venetian Port,
with soft lights, wooden tables and the slow evening movement of people along the waterfront.

Atmosphere

Even though the restaurant is in a very popular area, it is not loud.
The atmosphere is almost hypnotic: the combination of old town streets, the glow from the grill
and the sea air makes you want to stay longer. Most guests are tourists, but the staff treat
everyone with relaxed, genuine Cretan hospitality.

What We Ordered

We visited as a family. The kids went for a classic
μακαρόνια “καρμπονάρα” (macaroni carbonara), while my wife and I shared a
huge pork steak. The portion was so big that we couldn’t finish it – the staff
happily packed the rest as “πακέτο” to take home.

We also ordered several orektika (starters) and four glasses of cold beer.
The total bill was around 130€, which is a fair price for a full family dinner
right on the Old Port.

As in many good Cretan tavernas, the meal ended with a generous surprise:
three different desserts plus ice cream served as a complimentary treat.
It’s a small gesture, but it leaves a strong impression.

Signature Dish: Antikristo

One of the reasons to choose 6 Kamares is their traditional
“αντικριστό” – meat grilled around an open fire. On the Old Port,
almost nobody else prepares it this way. It’s a rare, old technique and the flavour is
unmistakable.

Location & Parking Tips

6 Kamares is located on the narrow waterfront of the Old Venetian Port, close to museums
and the historic alleys of Chania Old Town. There is a parking area near the museum,
but in reality it’s very hard to leave your car there.

A better option is to park near the Σκλαβενίτης (Sklavenitis) supermarket.
It can be busy, but you have a much better chance to find a spot. There is a height
barrier at about 2 metres, so keep that in mind. From there it’s an easy walk down through
the old town streets, and as you approach the harbour you get that classic view of the
Chania lighthouse, the symbol of the city.

Who Is 6 Kamares For?

Yes – it’s definitely worth visiting. This restaurant works well for:

  • families with children,
  • couples looking for a relaxed dinner,
  • travellers who want a first introduction to Cretan cuisine,
  • anyone curious to try real antikristo grilled meat.

Service is excellent, portions are huge, and the atmosphere feels real, not like a
plastic tourist trap. For an evening on the Old Port in Chania, 6 Kamares is a very
solid choice.
