Spinalonga is a fortified island shaped by Venetian, Ottoman and modern Greek history. It is best known for the community created during its use as a leprosy isolation site from 1903 to 1957. Driving from Heraklion to Spinalonga
For a self-drive visit, travel east from Heraklion to Plaka or Elounda and continue by local boat. From central Heraklion to Plaka, allow roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic and your starting point.
The road is paved throughout, but summer traffic can extend the journey. Leave time to park, buy or collect the boat ticket and board without relying on the final departure of the day.
Plaka: Shortest Crossing
Plaka sits directly opposite Spinalonga, and the crossing takes about 5 minutes. Choose Plaka when the island is your main priority and you want the shortest possible boat journey.
Elounda: Longer Boat Experience
Elounda is useful if you want to combine the island with lunch at Lotus Eaters or a walk in the resort town. The direct crossing takes about 10 minutes; excursion routes take longer. Check the exact route and return schedule before purchasing.
Agios Nikolaos: Fuller Cruise
The crossing from Agios Nikolaos takes about 35 minutes, creating a longer cruise experience. Choose this option for a broader Mirabello Bay outing rather than the quickest transfer to Spinalonga.

Can You Travel from Heraklion by Public Bus?
Public transport is possible, but it is the least convenient option. There is no single direct bus-and-ferry journey. The usual route requires a bus from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, another connection toward Elounda or Plaka, and then a boat to Spinalonga.
Choose this route only if avoiding a rental car matters more than convenience. Check current KTEL schedules and boat schedules, and leave a wide margin for the return journey.

This is the simplest self-drive plan.
Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos
- Drive to Plaka or Elounda for the island visit.
- Continue to Agios Nikolaos after returning to the mainland.
- Allow time for lunch at Karnagio / Pita tou Riga and a walk around Lake Voulismeni.
- Return to Heraklion without adding another major stop.
This creates a fuller day but requires more careful timing.
Tickets and Practical Preparation
When visiting independently, the boat ticket and archaeological-site admission are separate purchases. Standard admission currently costs €20, and official online admission tickets are available. Local boat tickets and operating schedules depend on the departure port.
On the island, expect stone paths, steps and exposed sections with limited shade. Bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear, especially during the warmer months. Pack swimwear and a towel if your itinerary includes Kolokytha. The featured tour is not listed as suitable for wheelchair users.
