Ha Gorge is the most dramatic and technically demanding canyon in Lasithi, located in the Thripti Mountains and suitable only for experienced hikers and canyoning specialists.

Lasithi Nature & Gorges → This guide explains everything you need to know about Ha Gorge, the most extreme canyon in eastern Crete.

Where Ha Gorge Is Located

Ha Gorge is located near the village of Vasiliki, between Ierapetra and Pachia Ammos, in the Thripti mountain range of Lasithi.

The gorge cuts deeply through the mountains, creating one of the narrowest and steepest canyon formations in Crete.

Important Reality: This Is Not a Normal Hike

Ha Gorge is not comparable to Richtis or other accessible walking gorges. The central section of the canyon includes:

  • Vertical drops
  • Large boulders
  • Technical scrambling
  • Canyoning-only passages

The full gorge route requires professional canyoning equipment and experience.

What Regular Visitors Can Do

Most travelers visit Ha Gorge for:

  • Viewing the dramatic canyon entrance
  • Short exploration of the lower accessible section
  • Photography

The lower entrance area offers impressive rock walls without technical climbing.

Upper Exit Route

There is a rough mountain road leading toward the upper exit of the gorge in the Thripti Mountains. This route is suitable only for confident drivers and high-clearance vehicles.

From the upper area, panoramic views extend across the south coast toward the Libyan Sea.

Difficulty Level

  • Lower section (viewing only): Easy
  • Partial exploration: Moderate–Difficult
  • Full canyon descent: Expert (canyoning only)

Independent hikers should not attempt the full descent without proper technical skills.

Best Time to Visit

  • Photographers seeking dramatic landscapes
  • Adventurous travelers comfortable in rugged terrain

  • Families with young children
  • Casual hikers
  • Visitors without proper footwear
  • Anyone expecting a marked tourist trail

Final Assessment

Ha Gorge is the most visually impressive and technically challenging canyon in Lasithi. For most visitors, it is a scenic stop rather than a full hike. Only trained canyoners should attempt the complete descent.
