Chania International Airport is the main gateway to western Crete. It is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, approximately 14 kilometers northeast of Chania city center.
Getting into Chania is usually straightforward. The airport is compact, the transport options are easy to find, and most travelers reach the city within 20 to 30 minutes.
The best option depends less on distance and more on what happens after you arrive: where you are staying, how much luggage you have, and whether Chania is your final stop or the beginning of a wider trip around western Crete.
Public Bus from Chania Airport
The public bus is the cheapest way to reach Chania. The stop is directly outside the terminal, and the bus takes you to Chania Central Bus Station.
This is a practical choice if you are traveling alone or as a couple, carrying light luggage, and staying near the Old Town or city center. From the bus station, many central hotels and apartments can be reached on foot.
The less convenient part comes at the end of the journey. Chania has narrow streets, uneven pavements, and pedestrian areas, so walking with heavy suitcases may be uncomfortable even when your accommodation looks close on the map.
