Kalathas Beach, Crete – Complete Travel Guide
Kalathas Beach is one of the most convenient and versatile beaches near Chania. Located just a few minutes from the city, it combines sandy shores, shallow water, easy access, and some of the most beautiful sunsets in the area. Kalathas works perfectly as a summer swimming beach, a winter sea escape, and a relaxed local spot where you can always find your rhythm.
Where Is Kalathas Beach?
Kalathas Beach is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, about 10–15 minutes by car from Chania city center and even closer to Chania International Airport. Thanks to its location, it is a popular choice for travelers on their first or last day in Crete, as well as for locals who want a quick escape to the sea.
Why Kalathas Beach Is So Popular
The main reason Kalathas Beach stands out is its balance. It offers a wide sandy beach, calm sea conditions, and a very gentle water entry, making it suitable for almost everyone. Families, solo swimmers, couples, and even winter swimmers all find something to love here.
Despite being close to the city, Kalathas never feels overly urban. Even during the busy summer months, the beach remains relaxed and well-organized.
Beach Conditions – Sand, Water Depth & Swimming
Kalathas Beach is fully sandy, both on the shore and underwater. The sea is usually calm, especially in the morning, and the water depth increases very gradually. You can walk far into the sea before it becomes deep, which makes swimming comfortable and safe.
Is Kalathas Beach Good for Families?
Yes, Kalathas is one of the best family-friendly beaches near Chania. The shallow water, soft sand, and easy access make it ideal for children. Parents can relax while kids play safely along the shore.
Fishing at Kalathas Beach
Kalathas is also a great spot for shore fishing. I often come here with a fishing rod, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. On one memorable day, I was lucky enough to catch a rofos (grouper) right here at Kalathas — an experience that made this beach even more special for me.
Fishing is best during calm sea conditions, when the water is clear and the beach is quieter.

Skalakia Taverna – Sunset Spot by the Sea
Right next to the beach, you will find a small seaside taverna called Skalakia. This is one of my favorite places at Kalathas. I often stop here just to sit down, order a cold beer, and enjoy the view.
If you are looking for a perfect sunset spot near Chania, Skalakia is hard to beat. Sitting by the sea as the sun slowly disappears into the water is a simple but unforgettable experience. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed and authentic.
