Richtis Gorge Guide

Richtis Gorge is one of the greenest and most scenic hikes in Lasithi, leading through a shaded canyon to a waterfall and secluded beach on the north coast of East Crete.

Lasithi Nature & Gorges → This guide covers Richtis Gorge, one of the most accessible and rewarding canyon hikes in eastern Crete.

Where Richtis Gorge Is Located

Richtis Gorge is located on the north coast of Lasithi between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The main trail entrance is near the village of Exo Mouliana, descending toward Richtis Beach.

Unlike many dry southern canyons, this gorge remains relatively green due to natural springs and shaded terrain.

Trail Overview

  • Distance (one way): approx. 3 km
  • Round trip time: 2.5–3 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Elevation profile: gradual descent toward the beach

The route follows an old stone mule path and includes wooden bridges, shaded forest sections, and small water crossings in spring.

The Waterfall

The main highlight is a waterfall around 20 meters high, located roughly 45–60 minutes from the upper entrance.

A natural pool forms at its base. Swimming is possible during warmer months, but water remains cold year-round.

Richtis Beach Extension

Continuing past the waterfall leads to Richtis Beach. This quiet, undeveloped beach marks the end of the gorge.

Some visitors park at the beach and hike uphill toward the waterfall. This option increases physical difficulty due to elevation gain.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May)

Maximum greenery and strongest water flow. Best overall season.

Early Summer (June)

Warm conditions with remaining water flow.

Mid-Summer (July–August)

Hot but shaded. Waterfall flow may decrease.

Autumn

Water levels depend on rainfall.

Parking & Access

Main parking is located near the upper entrance by Exo Mouliana. The road is paved but narrow.

Access via Richtis Beach requires driving a rougher section. Careful driving is necessary.

Safety Notes

  • Wear proper hiking shoes
  • Avoid visiting during heavy rain
  • Bring water
  • Mobile signal is limited inside the gorge

Who This Hike Is Best For

  • Travelers staying in eastern Lasithi
