The city of Chania lit up on December 7th, 2025, as hundreds of runners — children, adults, seniors and participants with limited mobility — took part in the annual Night Run Chania. This energetic event is organised under the coordination of the Municipality of Chania, the Region of Crete, the Chania Runners’ Health Association (ΣΔΥΧ), and the dedicated support teams of the Hellenic Red Cross and local police.

The race brings together locals, expats, and visitors who want to experience the city in a completely different way — running through the evening streets, passing historical buildings, and feeling the vibrant pulse of Chania after sunset.

Event Overview

This year’s event featured two main distances — 5 km and 10 km — suitable for all experience levels. The starting time was set at 17:00, just as the city lights illuminated the streets and the sky turned deep blue.

Atmosphere on the Streets

Chania’s streets were fully secured for the event. Roads were temporarily closed, police officers guided the route, and volunteers ensured smooth coordination. The atmosphere was warm, energetic and communal — families cheering, cafés open, and runners encouraging each other along the way.

One of the strongest impressions was the inclusion of everyone — from competitive athletes to casual joggers. Even participants in wheelchairs joined the race, accompanied by volunteers who ran beside them the entire route. This is what gives the Chania Night Run its soul.

The Role of the Hellenic Red Cross

The event would not have been possible without the dedicated work of the Hellenic Red Cross. Their teams were visible across the city, ready to offer first aid and assist anyone in need. Their kindness, professionalism and readiness were noticed and deeply appreciated by everyone present.

A Run Through Chania’s Heart

The route took runners through some of the city’s most recognisable areas — lively neighborhood streets, small squares, and the beautifully illuminated public buildings. The combination of winter air, evening lights and running crowds created a unique atmosphere.

Local Insight — by Zurab Peikrishvili

I live right along the route where the Night Run passed this year, and seeing the runners fly through my own neighborhood was an emotional moment. People cheering from balconies, volunteers smiling despite the cold, children running beside their parents — this is the Chania that I love.

This city is alive, warm, and united. Every time events like this take place, you feel the heartbeat of Crete. Chania is not only beaches, food and summer sunsets — it is also community, energy and shared experiences that bring people together.
