Step 1 — Choose Your Departure Point
You do not go directly to Spinalonga. First you arrive at the coast opposite the island. There are three possible starting points and the experience depends heavily on which one you choose.
- Plaka — shortest and simplest visit
- Elounda — medium distance crossing
- Agios Nikolaos — organized excursion boat
If your goal is only to see Spinalonga, Plaka is the most practical choice because it has the shortest crossing and boats operate frequently during the season. First and last departure times still depend on the operator.
Step 2 — Find the Boat Pier
In both Plaka and Elounda, walk to the waterfront and buy a round-trip boat transfer from one of the operators. Advance booking is usually not required for standard seasonal boats, although some operators also sell tickets online.
These are scheduled transfer boats. The boat ticket does not include admission to the archaeological site or a guided tour unless this is specifically stated.

Step 3 — Buy the Boat Transfer
You buy the round-trip boat transfer from the operator, either at the waterfront or online where offered. This payment covers only transportation to the island and back.
This is the most common mistake: the boat ticket is not the entrance ticket.

Step 4 — Cross to the Island
The crossing and travel format depend on where you depart:
- Plaka → about 10 minutes
- Elounda → about 20 minutes
- Agios Nikolaos → scheduled cruise; sailing time, island time and additional stops depend on the operator
You arrive at a small dock directly below the fortress walls.
Step 5 — Buy the Entrance Ticket
After leaving the boat, you walk 20–30 meters to the official entrance gate. Here you present an official online ticket or purchase the archaeological-site ticket at the gate.
The island is managed as a historical monument, not a private attraction, which is why transport and entry are separate payments.
Step 6 — Walk the Island
The visit is a walking route through streets, fortifications and viewpoints. There is no required direction, but most visitors naturally follow a loop path around the settlement and walls.
The terrain is stone and uneven, so proper shoes matter more than people expect.

Step 7 — Return Boat
Return arrangements depend on the boat operator. Before boarding, confirm whether your round-trip ticket allows you to use a later return boat and note the final departure time from Spinalonga.
Return to the dock before the last scheduled boat. Do not assume that every ticket allows an unrestricted return time.
Typical Timeline
- Arrive at the departure point
- Board the next scheduled boat
- Island visit about 60–120 minutes, depending on the return arrangements
- Return before the final scheduled boat

For departures from Plaka or Elounda, the journey works more like a short transfer than a full excursion, but schedules and return conditions still depend on the operator.
When the Visit Becomes Complicated
Planning becomes more restrictive in two common situations:
- Arriving during midday peak heat
- Taking a scheduled cruise from Agios Nikolaos without understanding the duration

Simple Rule
Drive to Plaka in the morning, buy the round-trip transfer at the waterfront, confirm the final return time, take the next scheduled departure and explore the island. Boat transport and archaeological-site admission remain separate payments.
