How to Visit Spinalonga

This page explains the real step-by-step process of visiting Spinalonga, from arriving at the coast to entering the island, so you know exactly what to do without confusion.

Return to the main Plaka & Spinalonga Guide

Step 1 — Choose Your Departure Point

You do not go directly to Spinalonga. First you arrive at the coast opposite the island. There are three possible starting points and the experience depends heavily on which one you choose.

  • Plaka — shortest and simplest visit
  • Elounda — medium distance crossing
  • Agios Nikolaos — organized excursion boat

If your goal is only to see Spinalonga, Plaka is the most practical choice because boats run constantly and you are not tied to a schedule.

Step 2 — Find the Boat Pier

In both Plaka and Elounda you simply walk to the waterfront. There is no central ticket office and no online reservation required for standard boats.

You will see small shuttle boats operating continuously. They function like water taxis rather than tours.

Step 3 — Buy the Boat Transfer

You pay the boat operator directly before boarding. This payment covers only transportation to the island and back.

This is the most common mistake: the boat ticket is not the entrance ticket.

Step 4 — Cross to the Island

The crossing is short:

  • Plaka → about 10 minutes
  • Elounda → about 20 minutes
  • Agios Nikolaos → about 60 minutes

You arrive at a small dock directly below the fortress walls.

Step 5 — Buy the Entrance Ticket

After leaving the boat you walk 20–30 meters to the official entrance gate. Here you purchase the archaeological site ticket.

The island is managed as a historical monument, not a private attraction, which is why transport and entry are separate payments.

Step 6 — Walk the Island

The visit is a walking route through streets, fortifications and viewpoints. There is no required direction, but most visitors naturally follow a loop path around the settlement and walls.

The terrain is stone and uneven, so proper shoes matter more than people expect.

Step 7 — Return Boat

You do not reserve a return time in advance when departing from Plaka or Elounda. Boats go back continuously throughout the day.

You simply return to the dock and board the next available boat.

Typical Timeline

  • Arrival to coast
  • Board boat within minutes
  • Island walk 60–90 minutes
  • Return anytime

The visit works more like a shuttle than an excursion, which makes planning easy once understood.

When the Visit Becomes Complicated

Problems usually happen only in two situations:

  • Arriving during midday peak heat
  • Taking a scheduled cruise from Agios Nikolaos without understanding the duration

In both cases visitors lose flexibility and the experience becomes tiring instead of enjoyable.

Simple Rule

Drive to Plaka in the morning, take the first available boat, explore the island, return when finished. The process is straightforward once you know that transport and entry are separate steps.
