Platanias Beach is one of the most popular resort beaches in western Chania, designed for
easy, comfortable family holidays. To be honest, Platanias, Agia Marina and Stalos form one long,
continuous beach zone — the difference is not in the sea, but in where you stay and what is closer to you.

What Platanias Beach Is Really Like

  • Long sandy coastline
  • Gentle sea entry, suitable for children
  • Organised beach areas with sunbeds
  • Hotels, apartments and restaurants along the shore
  • Busy and lively in summer, calm in winter

Platanias is not about wild nature or dramatic landscapes. It is about
comfort, accessibility and predictability — exactly what many families are looking for.

Why Families Choose Platanias

  • Soft sand instead of rocks
  • Safe swimming for kids
  • Everything within walking distance
  • Easy access with strollers
  • Suitable for all age groups

Facilities and Infrastructure

  • Showers and changing cabins — available on most sections
  • Toilets — located inside beach bars and restaurants
  • Sunbeds — operated by cafés and tavernas
  • Shops, pharmacies and bakeries nearby

Local Insight — by Zurab Peikrishvili

I’ve walked this coastline countless times — from Stalos all the way to Platanias.
In winter, this place transforms completely. Quiet mornings, empty sand, sunrise over the sea.

I love walking barefoot along the shore early in the morning. My fishing style is mobile —
stop for a few minutes, make several casts, then move on. Over a few hours you can walk several
kilometres along the water.

Summer brings noise and life. Winter brings peace. That’s the real character of Platanias.

Wind and Sea Conditions

As with most west-facing beaches in Chania:

  • Waves appear with west or northwest winds
  • On calm days, swimming conditions are excellent
  • During strong winds, sheltered beaches are better alternatives
